First Blog Post

Greetings, Blogging World,
I am not sure where to begin for I have not yet decided what I want for my blog to be.  I love to write, I love to journal, I want to blog.  I trust it will take shape as the days unfold.

How about a little biographical stuff, hmm?  I'm single, in my 40's, no children, bachelors degree in education, have worked in numerous fields, but am currently unemployed. But I must say, life is good. I mean, it could be worse. I could be in an unhappy relationship, have children but not get along with them, have a terrible job that doesn't pay much and I could be living on the street. That is not the case....

however, it seems appropriate to say here, WHY do we judge our circumstances so?  Life is what we make of it.  Our circumstances are bad ONLY if we think they are bad. Someone else may have the same circumstances and not feel that it's all that bad.  I do not really get into comparisons very much because I think they can be dangerous, and depressing, but...when we use comparison for a positive end it can help. For instance, there is always someone else out there that has experienced something that we might consider *worse* than our own situation. Therefore, we feel better.  Well, at least "that" didn't happen to me.

I love to read and have gotten rid of my TV set.  I'm cataloging and categorizing my books and there are just so many of them, I surely must spend the next few years devoted to either reading them, donating them, or giving them away.  I read mostly nonfiction, but find good fiction to be refreshing.

I recently read Nicholas Evans' book, The Divide, and found myself to be staying up late, reading it in the bathroom (which of course caused me to be in there much longer than I really needed to be!), forsaking other chores, just to read through the book. Great book, they should make a movie out of it.

Afterwards I began The Horse Whisperer by the same author.  I knew it would be different from the movie. So far, there are two similarities between the two books.  Horses and snow. Hmm.

Before I got very far in that book, I found out that Nicholas Sparks would be visiting my city for a book signing, so I jumped to reading The Best of Me.  I wish that he had not told us how hard it had been to write the book. How he had to rewrite it twice before getting it right. That he had to add several characters to make the story work. Because, as I was reading it, I kept thinking, hmm, guess he had to add this or that character during the rewrite. I found myself being critical; however, the book was good. As usual, the ending caught me off-guard. Very clever.

Mr. Sparks spoke to the crowd during breaks at the signing.  I was pleased to learn that The Lucky One and Safe Haven are being made into movies and are expected to be out in the theaters next year.  He told us a funny story about how he is rarely recognized in public. Case in point, he was sitting on the airplane with a woman who was reading his book.  She even spoke to him about the book and how big a fan she was of Nicholas Sparks, but did not realize it was him that she was sitting next to. She turned the book over and took a nap, his photo was staring straight up at her. She still didn't notice.  As they were disembarking the plane, he asked if she'd like him to sign her book. She looked at him and asked why would he want to do that. He humbly responded, "no reason....."   How funny is that???  Hey, I'm not judging.  I just went to the signing and was in the front row as he spoke.  When he asked whether the crowd had any questions, I was speechless.  (very unusual for me)  That's 3 years that I've gone to his booksignings and haven't asked a single question. Geez. Guess I'm starstruck!

Recent Movies I've seen:
  • The Debt
  • Sarah's Key
I thought they were both excellent movies. The Debt starred Helen Mirren (The Queen) and Sam Worthington (Avatar). Sarah's Key starred Kristin Scott Thomas (The Matrix).  http://www.imdb.com/ offers some very interesting movie reviews.  Both movies toggled between modern times and events of decades ago.
